FriendlyGerman Etiquette - Social Greetings
Even the social context is impinged with formality in Germany.
Shaking hands is still the preferred mode of greeting. Lateness is still
not tolerated. When entering the home of your German host, wait for him
to introduce you to his/her family. Shake hands with everybody, even
children.
Gift giving is considered appropriate when visiting a German home. Gifts
such as flowers and chocolates are acceptable. If you are giving
flowers, prefer yellow to red roses as the latter signify romantic
intentions. Avoid carnations also as they are for mourning. Lilies and
chrysanthemums are used at funerals and cannot be given as gifts. If you
bring wine, choose imported wine (French or Italian) as giving local
wine may mean that the host will not provide good wine. Do not be
surprised to find that gifts are opened immediately on being received.
